2025 Re-Reverse – Kunstraum 34

Re-reverse (2025) explores the German tradition of „Ausläuten“ (ringing out)- whereby in villages, when a resident dies, a so-called „death bell“ sounds for a period of time.

What was once an important means of communication in centuries pass is now a slowly dying practice. The multi-channel video explores this phenomenon and places it in a historical context: During the two world wars, 145 000 church bells in Germany were melted down for the armaments industry to „ensure the metal reserve for a long-lasting war“.

For the recording of „Re-reverse“, I chose a very specific selection of bells: some that were cast as replacements after the Second World War, some that have been stolen, and some that miraculously survived the melting process and were returned after the war.
